Running head: TIME MANAGEMENT 0 TIME MANAGEMENT Betsy Quinones NSG4029—Leadership in a Diverse Society Week 1, Assignment 1 July 9, 2020 Time Management The concept of leadership plays a critical role in the field of nursing. Therefore, leadership involves organizing, addressing, and transferring various duties to healthcare workers. “Leaders commonly are anticipated to utilize their relational aptitudes in helping devotees accomplish their most elevated capabilities, including affecting other’s perspectives, convictions, and practices so as to help maximize their efficiency” (Scully, 2015). Thus, it establishes the feeling of recognition, which is essential in developing the concept of self-realization and trust. The main duty of leaders is to ensure a cheerful workplace and promoting proficiency by minimizing conflicts in the working environment. Therefore, leaders should possess various characteristics and capabilities that enable them to achieve their needs in a culturally diverse workplace (Scully, 2015). Critical aspects of leadership include professional organizations, time management, the styles in leadership, and leadership comparison. Leadership Theory “There are three essential leadership speculations that delineate the leadership styles that most corporate pioneers use all around; therefore, the hypotheses are totalitarian, participative, and delegative initiative speculations” (Curtis, Vries, & Sheerin, 2011). The general concept of leadership styles depends on how the situation is respected. Therefore, the pioneers must identify their suitable leadership style. Thus, in the nursing field, I think that the “participative initiative style” is suitable. “Participative pioneers enable powerful venture and commitments from their supporters through the sharing of considerations to choose taught decisions” (Curtis, Vries, & Sheerin, 2011). This particular leadership style is critical in nursing because data and expertise are necessary for selecting continuously instructed decisions in healthcare. “Along these lines, it is shrewd to counsel them for their master feelings before settling on any choices that would impact them” (Curtis, Vries, & Sheerin, 2011). “Including all individuals in dynamic procedures causes them to feel esteemed along these lines expanding their inspiration at the work environment and generally speaking occupation fulfillment; hence, this builds proficiency and advances achievement” (Curtis, Vries, & Sheerin, 2011). Leadership vs. Management Various individuals utilize the concepts of leadership as well as general leadership according to their delineations. Leadership and management differ in the concept of the course pioneer (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley, 2019). A course pioneer is considered as an individual that engage, rouse, and move other individuals in upgrading their institution. Thus, leaders constantly acquire followership based on their attributes, their leadership qualities, and their practices (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley, 2019). From these particular delineations, they use relational capacities to help their followers with attaining their goals irrespective of not being the same. The management involves the expression of control, categorization, and organizing the personnel to achieve a certain goal. The managers constantly use their position to ensure that their junior perform their roles to accomplish the objectives of the organization as planned. Therefore, the workers must follow the instructions of the manager irrespective of whether they do not agree with the instructions (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley, 2019). Professional Nursing Organization Professional nursing organizations are usually responsible for representing the objectives of medical attendance in the political environment. They also assist in ensuring that the medical attendants’ are considered pioneers by enhancing their leadership skills and abilities. Therefore, they provide leadership roles, including mentoring leaders and ensuring that leaders join proficient assistance. Time Management Nursing is a field that involves complex and dynamic roles of leadership. Various approaches and predicaments joined with no clinical professionals is a critical test for the healthcare providers. “They are constrained to work under strain in light of the unimportant flexibility of timetables and still perform incredibly; thus, should be extraordinary time directors who can achieve more in less time to oblige the intrigue for nursing leaderships” (Weiss, Tappen, & Grimley, 2019). The outcomes gained from the exam reveals that my most elevated score stands at 30-35. Therefore, I think that it describes the decency in my leadership. Thus, I can strain through and accomplish objectives on time by following various set timelines. Application to the workplace The most critical concept part is to apply the data gained from the class in the workplace as a leader in the nursing field. Therefore, I would utilize the hypothesis of the majority rule leadership by obtaining data assessment and selecting effective decisions that will impact such data. I think it is also essential that I become a pioneer rather than just a leader by assisting my workmates in accomplishing their set objectives. Conclusion In general, leadership in a culturally diverse environment requires competent skills. The suitable leadership style that can assist in fostering the pioneers to attain various set goals and or objectives at different levels is the participative initiative. The professional affiliations also assist in fostering the pioneers through arrangement and provision of the stage of initiating an improvement of skills and abilities. Therefore, as a leader and a pioneer in the nursing field, I will utilize knowledge from the class in the workplace, which will assist me in fostering my leadership skills. References Curtis, E. Running head: PERSONALITY AND LEADERSHIP 0 Personality and Leadership Betsy Quinones NSG4029—Leadership in a Diverse Society Week 2, Assignment 1 July 10, 2020 Personality and Leadership Introduction Personality Type: ISTJ From the online personality test assessment, my personality type is ISTJ, which involves introversion, sensing, thinking, and judgment. The character of individuals with the ISTJ personality includes dependable managers, who follow and ensures order in their working environment, have methodologies for their doings, well-behaved, and strictly adhere to rules and regulations. Therefore, such personalities are significant contributors to success in their work environment. They are always involved in the activities, and, therefore, they always need to comprehend their various positions in an organization. Such personalities always meet the set goals and or objectives of the organization. This paper involves the analysis of my personality type, which is ISTJ, and how it can improve or hinder valuable leadership in the nursing field. How my personality type, ISTJ, can ensure effective leadership The ISTJ personality type can keep the knowledge from their preceding expertise and utilize the experience in solving new problems (Spain, 2019). Therefore, this particular character will ensure effective leadership because I can keep knowledge acquired from previous learning and experience and use the knowledge and expertise in problem-solving and overcoming various challenges (Adams, 2009). This particular trait will also assist me in identifying various circumstances at different times and using similar knowledge in solving the problem. This specific character will also help me train my subordinates by sharing knowledge and information from my past experiences and learning. My capabilities include handling, organizing, defining, planning, implementing, and undertaking various tasks and ensuring completion according to the set timeline. Therefore, this specific ability depicts that I cannot allow any obstacles while performing assigned duties. Thus, this trait is critical in the nursing field because the nurse leaders must be active and practical, and, therefore, this trait is will ensure that I can concentrate on various projects. This trait will also help me establish the right plans and organize different responsibilities before beginning the execution. In the nursing field, it is necessary to organize various projects and procedures for effective implementations (Gobbi, 2017), which will ensure quality and improved outcomes, and, therefore, as a leader, it will assist me in achieving set goals and or objectives, which mainly involves quality and improved outcomes. My ISTJ personality ensures opportunities for more significant responsibilities through performance evaluation and promotions (Spain, 2019). Therefore, this character is essential in providing effective leadership in the nursing field by delegating duties to subordinates. Thus, it will grant them opportunities for advancing and improving their knowledge and experience. It will also ensure compensations and promotions for my junior staff through performance evaluation; thus, this will foster my leadership in the nursing environment. How my personality type, ISTJ, can hinder effective leadership I have a strict adherence to rules and regulations, which may hinder effective leadership in the nursing environment. I may allow flexibility to change various rules and regulations that may be inapplicable, which may cause conflicts with the junior staff. Also, I wouldn’t say I like sharing my emotions, which may also destruct people from approaching me for various queries and consultations; therefore, they may end up doing things incorrectly. The subordinate staff may not express their opinions because of my character. I also have a character of resisting change with no proven benefits. This may also obstruct practical leadership in the nursing field because the nursing profession is vibrant, which may involve various changes (Gobbi, 2017). Changes may also be significant for the subordinate staff, and, therefore, resisting such changes will not ensure the professional growth of the subordinate staff. Thus, my character that involves resisting various changes in the nursing environment will hinder effective leadership. The four aspects of personality Introversion My personality involves introversion; therefore, I require time and space (i.e., personal isolation). Thus, through inner thoughts and reflections, I can get motivations and inspirations. It also means that I cannot be destructed by other people, which will ensure that I am focused and independent in achieving set goals and or objectives. Sensing It depicts my full reliance on senses in obtaining information. I can also learn through effective listening and visual orientation. I love engaging with concrete facts and hand-on experience. I always do not agree with various facts that are not supported by actual experimental facts. I still consider data acquired from research as relevant. Thinking The decisions that I always make are based on analysis, logic, and reasoning. I utilize a longer time in decision-making because it is essential to classify rationale on every decision that I make. Judge I am strong-minded, articulated, organized, and meet expectations as well as set objectives. I also like arranging and planning various activities before execution. However, I wouldn’t say I like changing multiple decisions that I made unless the changes are based on concrete facts. Conclusion It is essential to analyze personality types to assist individuals in improving leadership skills. Therefore, one can identify various characters that hinder effective leadership and improve such traits to ensure sufficient leadership. The ISTJ personality type has various strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, I will use such strengths in promoting effective and practical leadership in the nursing field and use work on improving the weaknesses. References Adams, D. L. (2009). Running head: CONFLICT HANDLING 0 Conflict Handling Betsy Quinones NSG4029—Leadership in a Diverse Society Week 3, Assignment 1 July 15, 2020 Conflict Handling Introduction Change is a vital aspect of the nursing process. It is a challenging process for nurse leaders to organize and lead a change in their organizations. The process is challenging because of the complexities of the ever-changing healthcare industry. For nurse leaders to be effective in their leadership, they must familiarize themselves with various change theories and the framework of each theory. Understanding the framework of each theory provides a firm ground for every change that a nurse leader wants to initiate. Every change process has its obstacles and there is a need to understand them and handle them constructively. One of the main obstacles to change is conflict. It is, therefore, vital to understand various ways of handling conflicts as a leader so that you can bring all the members of an organization together and work as a team. Working as a team requires people to be united and that is only possible if the conflicts are resolved effectively. Change theories, conflict theories, and leader as a change agent A nurse leader has to ensure that the day-to-day operations of various units in the organization are rapidly evolving and changing according to the healthcare system. A nurse leader is often described as an agent of change and that means that he or she has to be responsible for the success of various projects in nursing units (Pawl & Anderson, 2017). However, literature shows that nurse leaders are still struggling with change despite the number of times they are involved in change activities. Change agents have both informal and formal power to direct change processes in nursing organizations. Such leaders have a responsibility to identify the rationale and vision of the change. A nurse leader influences staff behavior towards change by understanding the various challenges encountered in the change process and how to handle them. Nurse leaders face a significant number of changes that require them to adopt new ways of thinking for effective leadership. They work closely with other healthcare providers to figure out essential changes in the organization that can improve patient care and work process. As such, leaders should have the necessary skills to influence human behavior, intelligence, decisiveness for effective changes (Cleary, West, Arthur & Kornhaber, 2019). Influencing human behavior needs nurse leaders to understand change theories and conflict theories so that they can adopt the right change theory and solve conflicts effectively when they arise during the change process. One of the widely used change theory is known as Lewin’s change theory. This theory is popular in nursing and it consists of three stages. These stages are unfreezing stage, moving stage, and refreezing stage. According to this theory, change is determined by the presence of resistant and driving forces (Doll, Cornelison, Rath & Syme, 2017). A driving force refers to the change agent who pushes other staff members in the right direction of change. A resistant force refers to the group of staff members who are opposed to the proposed change. For change to be successful, the driving force of the theory should be stronger and dominate the resistant force. There is also a modification of Lewin’s theory which is adopted as Roger’s change theory. This theory is based on five stages of change. These stages include awareness, interest, evaluation, implementation, and adoption. Roger’s theory is applied when long-term changes are required. According to Roger, a change becomes successful when a change proposed and opposed earlier by nurses in a given unit is adopted later because of the positive information they acquire from nurses who adopted the same change (Doll, Cornelison, Rath & Syme, 2017). Lastly, there is the Spradley’s change. Spradley’s theory is an eight-step process based on Lewin’s theory. The steps include recognizing the symptoms, diagnosing the problem, analyzing alternative solutions, selecting the change, planning the change, implementing the change, evaluating the change, and stabilizing the change. Since changes are never smooth due to the presence of opposing individuals, change agents should have conflict-handling styles. Developing conflict handling skills needs one to master various conflict theories. There are four major conflict theories in nursing namely social conflict theory, organizational conflict theory, social exchange theory, and social cognitive theory. Organizational conflict theory highlights conflicts between various entities within an organization (Cleary, West, Arthur & Kornhaber, 2019). Conflict can be between departments, individuals, or organizations. Social conflict theory refers to the conflict that exists between people who are motivated to act according to their desires without considering the desires of the others. Nurse leaders have to know the possible causes of this conflict and put in place measures to avoid them. Social cognitive theory is based on conflicts that occur in a social context of learning. Social exchange theory states that conflicts arise when there is no give and take balance in a relationship. Therefore, leaders have to drive a give and take balance in various nursing units that they lead to avoid conflicts. Conclusion The three concepts are related and a nurse leader should understand their relationship so that they can lead changes successfully. A nurse leader is the change agent in a nursing facility. To push a change in the organization, he or she should combine the knowledge of conflict theories with change theories so that the best change approaches are adopted and the right conflict resolution measures are taken according to the type of conflict encountered during a change process. Running head: EI THEORIES 0 EI Theories Betsy Quinones NSG4029—Leadership in a Diverse Society Week 4, Assignment 1 July 23, 2020 Effects of EI on leadership Many leaders have been known to have a high emotional intelligence level. This is a requirement for leadership as the leaders get involved with many people. To ensure effective leadership, the leader must relate well with the people and understand their emotions. This is why high EI is required (Serrat, 2017). Healthcare centers, just like all other organizations require leaders for the management of activities. These leaders are chosen among the nurses and doctors. These leaders are responsible for both the sick people, fellow health providers, and families of the patients. Emotional intelligence, aides these nurses to keep track of their emotions and those of others before making a decision. Effective leadership has is highly contributed by the personality of the leader who in turn influences those around him or her. Communication in healthcare is a necessity. This could be communication between a nurse and his patient, a nurse, and the family of the patient, or a nurse to other nurses and health providers (Serrat, 2017). Emotional intelligence contributes to how this communication is done. An example of when EI is required in communication is in the case of a nurse leader and a patient. The EI element helps him relate to patients feeling in administering care. That is, the nurse is in a position to identify when a patient is telling the truth about background health information, and when they are lying. alive for long. This will however mean that they will confide with a family member on the health and condition of the patient. In some cases, the patients take offense if the nurses lie to them on their poor health conditions. For that reason, some nurses choose to tell the patients the truth and help them in preparing their future in the case that the conditions are incurable and death is imminent (Park et al, 2018). For serious situations that cannot be cured but there are ways of prolonging the life of the patient, discussing the true diagnosis is important. This will give the patient a chance to choose the action to be taken. It is also important as it relieves the patient of the fear of death. EI is also important in transformational leadership. Nurses with high EI were seen to have three important aspects, which are idealized influence, individualized consideration, and inspirational motivation. Idealized influence in these nurse leaders encouraged the junior staff to come up with ideas that contributed to the mission and goals of the health center (Park et al, 2018). Inspirational motivation in leadership plays a role in encouraging the subordinate staff to keep offering their support and services. The duty of health care workers involves dealing with all ages of people and those with different emotions. Sometimes the health care providers face hostility from these patients. It is important for the nurses to be patient and to offer their services regardless of the bad attitude. Individualized consideration is a character relevant to EI. It is concerned with how the nurses attend to their patients. Besides that, it relates to how the leaders treat the junior staff. Considering the emotions of junior staff in the allocation of duties and compensation results to good performance (Cleary et al, 2018). This means that the management looks at the workers individually. Situations that will affect the emotions of a health provider negatively may interfere with the results affecting the health of a patient. For instance, if a health provider is afraid of blood allocating them duties in the emergency department might have negative effects on the performance. Emotional quotient is attributed to healthy working environments in many organizations. When we say that an environment is healthy we target the emotions of the workers. This is achieved by ensuring good relationships between the workers and the management (Cleary et al, 2018). The cases of bullying are done away with to give every health provider a chance to offer services comfortably. Additionally, a healthy environment encourages teamwork among the workers. This has an effect of good performance as workers exchange ideas between them. New developments are encouraged as all innovative minds are working together. Results of the EI quiz The results of the quiz were on 12/20. That means that 12 of the 20 questions were answered correctly. A fair understanding of the people’s emotions depicted in there was seen. The difficulty in differentiating different emotions resulted in that score. For example, sadness and embarrassment. The thin line existing between how people show sadness and embarrassment results in confusion. The emotion of flirting and love can easily be confused. Different people express similar emotions differently. An example is a pain. The expression people have on their faces to denote a certain emotion may differ from that of others.
